Effects of carotid ligation on the size of internal carotid aneurysms.

چکیده

Aneurysms of the intrathecal portion of the internal carotid artery are commonly treated by ligation of one of the carotid arteries in the neck. After ligation of the internal carotid artery, subsequent angiographic demonstration of the site ofsuch an aneurysm may prove difficult or impossible; but if ligation has been confined to the common carotid the internal carotid artery usually remains patent, and its injection either by percutaneous puncture or after its exposure then gives good filling of the aneurysm site. This study has been undertaken to examine 25 such cases in detail, to discover what happens to these aneurysms following carotid ligation. With the exception of cases 6, 21, and 24 they were extracted from a consecutive series of carotid aneurysms reported elsewhere (Gibbs, 1962). In the illustrations, traced in the first instance on polythene film, the posterior communicating and ophthalmic arteries have been reproduced whenever filled on angiography. In each case the anterior cerebral artery is identified by dots: two dots if it is continued on to fill the pericallosal artery and one if it fades away at that level. Clinical features have been summarized in the table. T1th

Vascular compression of the optic nerves relieved by anastomosis of carotid artery to jugular vein.

The intracranial segment of the optic nerve, crossed near the chiasma by the anterior cerebral artery and fixed anteriorly at its entry into the optic foramen, is particularly vulnerable to compression by vascular deformities of the internal carotid artery or its branches. Aneurysms arising in this region may be surgically inaccessible directly, because of their size or because they arise from ...

A Lumped Parameter Method to Calculate the Effect of Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion on Anterior Cerebral Artery Pressure Waveform

Background and Objective: Numerical modeling of biological structures would be very helpful tool to analyze hundreds of human body phenomena and also diseases diagnosis. One physiologic phenomenon is blood circulatory system and heart hemodynamic performance that can be simulated by utilizing lumped method. In this study, we can predict hemodynamic behavior of one artery of circulatory system (...

Bypass to the intracranial giant or large internal carotid artery aneurysms: superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass re-visited.

OBJECTIVE Hunterian ligation of the internal carotid artery is an acceptable treatment modality for inoperable intracranial carotid aneurysms. Despite the risk of thrombo-embolic complications, ligation together with superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass surgery is vital in some patients. Our aim is to present our experience in five patients in whom STA-MCA bypass ...

Safety of carotid ligation and its role in the management of intracranial aneurysms.

By using measurements of cerebral blood flow and internal carotid artery pressure it is possible to select patients in whom carotid ligation can be performed with a very low risk of post-operative cerebral ischaemia. A study has been carried out in 100 patients comparing this method with clinical predictions of the type used in aneurysm surgery based on age of the patient, arterial hypertension...

Cerebral blood flow, internal carotid artery pressure, and the EEG as a guide to the safety of carotid ligation.

Twenty patients with aneurysms of the internal carotid artery underwent temporary clamping, in turn, of the internal and then the common carotid artery. Cerebral blood flow, internal carotid artery pressure, and the EEG were recorded to assess the probability of cerebral ischaemia after permanent ligation. With this method of monitoring the cerebral circulation, 17 of the 20 patients had a perm...
